Everything came up Lavender last Sunday (16 July) as Mary and I made our way to Sharon Springs. The little town is interesting enough … sulphur rich mineral springs were considered therapeutic by the Iroquois … then it was a destination for non-Indians. It became more popular for a while after WWII, when future NYC Mayor Ed Koch was a busboy at a hotel there for a while. It wasn't really part of the “Borsht Belt” phenomenon … a little too far north and west, apparently … but then in the 1970s it became a hangout for the Hasidim and Ultra-Orthodox Jews. Since then it waned, and then in the past few years has undergone a very slow waxing with gentrification.
Anyway, Mary read last week that the last day of the visitor season at Slate Hll Lavender Farm was today …. so off we went. And it was gorgeous. Stunning location high on a hill overlooking the Southern Tier of the Adirondacks, in that part of the world they call “the Leatherstocking Region,” drawn from Fenimore Cooper's stories.
So glad we went … cool enough day, but smotheringly humid, but on the hill there was a breeze. Such a lovely drive.
